The Muskegon County Road Commission on Wednesday, May 8 will close Staple Road immediately north of Riley-Thompson Road to replace a culvert like this one.

MUSKEGON, MI – The Muskegon County Road Commission on Wednesday will close Staple Road immediately north of Riley-Thompson Road to replace an aging and rusting culvert.

The Dalton Township roadway will be closed from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and only local traffic will be allowed to pass through barricades on Duff and Michillinda roads, said Mark Timmer, sign shop foreman and safety coordinator.

"We have had problems with sinkholes there and we knew that culvert was failing," Timmer said.

The weather forecast for Wednesday made the day an ideal time to replace the old, 24-inch corrugated metal pipe culvert with a 24-inch plastic pipe culvert, he said.

Ken Hulka, managing director for the road commission, said the project would cost about $5,000.

This week the commission will also pave a stretch of Sherman Road from Shaw to Canada roads in Casnovia Township, if weather permits, Timmer said.

The final work comes after the road commission reopened the road located east of 32nd Street on Friday after installing a new 36-inch plastic culvert after record rainfall and flooding caused the commission to close the road on April 18.

Hulka said the cost estimate for the Sherman Boulevard project will be $21,475.
