the need of extensive home office use in 2020 led jiří příhoda
to create ‘biblio-pavilion’ — a place to escape from the computer screen and be submerged in the parallel reality of printed medium, with ample space to lounge with a book. internally, the reading room takes on the form of an empty baroque helix column, peeled inside-out by a rectangular grid of vertical and horizontal planes of white, painted, plywood construction. with ‘biblio-pavilion’, příhoda
continues to expand his experimentation with negative shapes formed by baroque-era architectural elements, which was first introduced at his participation in the design exhibition DOMUS in 2015, and in his solo exhibition at chateau troja, prague in 2016.

příhoda
decided to work on two versions of both the exterior and the interior of ‘biblio-pavilion’. the ‘interior – sculptural’ version of the pavilion, without any ceiling or outer cylindrical wall, is ideal to place into a larger architecture with daylight seeping through its roof. one can stack hundreds of books around its outer perimeter, and the whole object becomes one giant cylindrical bookcase. meanwhile, in the ‘exterior – architectural’ version of the pavilion, the ceiling is conceived out of corrugated clear roof sheeting, which is also used as a cylindrical outer wall. the winding stairwell, spiraling around the helix interior, becomes a space where one can locate books on a single, large spiral bookcase.
