making their debut in the architectural profession, the montana-based good design collective have recently completed ‘2611’, a three part structure situated on the edge of a residential neighborhood ad wildlife refuge in bozeman. the project consists of a green house and planter beds located closest to the protected wildlife area, an exterior fire pit and storage shed, and a multi-functional bench adjacent to the residence that represent the harvest, preparation, and gathering spaces. the tight budget gave the designers an opportunity to focus on the technical aspects of the design and fabrication, making sure to manifest ideas clearly through meticulously thought-out connections and materials.

the wooden slats making up the lattice siding of the green house were salvaged from a nearby wolf reserve, the steel components fabricated locally, and the board form concrete poured on site. a wooden frame system clad in corrugated plastic panels allows plenty of natural light into the structure, creating a protected environment for the production of various plants and vegetables. vibrant vertical orange awning windows provide the necessary ventilation and an opaque sliding timber barn door conceals itself as part of the wall, opening directly to a piano inside the small construct.

at the lower level, a concrete retaining wall wraps around an exterior fire pit on a ground characterized by a bed of rock and sectional cuts of variously sized logs. seating and storage components were designed and built extending the natural material palette of wood, concrete, and steel. a storage facility of larger timber planks contains a revolving corner opening clad in the same finer lattice. towards the residential side of the lot, a bench of overlapping planes and a sliding butcher block cover serves as an additional seating, storage and food preparation, and planters.
